IN PASSAGE

quiet crossings through light, layer and time

In Passage is a solo exhibition by Midge Johnson, curated by Mara Torres González. It presents a body of abstract work that dwells in states of transition—moments where form is neither fixed nor resolved, but continually unfolding. Through a shared sensitivity to material, space, and restraint, the exhibition frames painting as an experience of quiet movement rather than a destination.

Johnson’s paintings operate as subtle crossings, shaped by accumulation, erosion, and light. Built through layered pigment, scraping, and translucency, each surface bears the trace of time. Architectural suggestions—arched forms, vertical passages, and softened boundaries—emerge and recede without declaration. These elements are not literal structures, but experiential markers that invite the viewer into shifting spatial impressions.

Curated by Torres González, the exhibition emphasizes the interplay between material process and perception. Light functions as both material and metaphor, revealing what has been laid down, worn away, or held in suspension. Color moves gently across the surface, creating depth through restraint rather than contrast, rewarding sustained looking with subtle shifts and echoes of prior gestures.

In Passage is not concerned with arrival, but with movement itself—the slow, quiet crossings that occur through making, seeing, and remembering. Here, abstraction becomes a site of reflection, where painting records the passage of time as much as it creates space.
