fifth Element
Beyond earth, air, fire, and water lies a more elusive force—one that cannot be weighed, poured, or contained. Traditionally known as aether or quintessence, the fifth Element has long been understood as the invisible substance that binds all others: spirit, consciousness, pure life energy. It is the animating presence that brings balance to matter and meaning to form.
fifth Element brings this idea into the contemporary moment through a curated selection of paintings and sculptures by gallery artists Juan Alonso Rodríguez, Mark Bettis, Lori Childers, Elise Gold Sewall, Christina Jensen Vicente, Midge Johnson, Deena Marie King, Bruce Robertson, Judy Robertson, Jack Shapiro, Gaby Silva Bavio, Mara Torres González and Christina P. Wyatt. Working across diverse materials, aesthetics, and conceptual approaches, these artists explore what exists beyond the tangible—gesture, memory, intuition, rhythm, and transcendence.
Here, the fifth Element functions not only as a philosophical concept, but as a connective thread—linking artists, mediums, and visual languages that might otherwise seem disparate. Painting and sculpture, abstraction and representation, restraint and intensity coexist through a shared undercurrent of intention and energy. This invisible bond is what allows the exhibition to read as a unified experience rather than a collection of individual practices.
In this exhibition, the fifth Element is not illustrated literally; it is sensed. It emerges in the tension between solidity and movement, in the dialogue between surface and void, in works that suggest inner landscapes as much as physical ones. Sculpture anchors energy in space, while painting becomes a field where emotion, spirit, and perception converge. Each piece operates as a vessel—holding traces of something unseen yet deeply felt.
Collectively, the works invite viewers to consider art as a unifying force: a space where the material and immaterial meet, where form becomes a conduit for spirit. Fifth Element is an exploration of balance, resonance, and connection—the subtle force that binds diverse voices into a coherent whole.
